Saint Louis Zoo to Research Equine Supplement
St. Louis, Missouri, January 28, 2008 — Arenus, a business specifically devoted to the health, performance, and longevity of humans and companion animals, announced a partnership with the Saint Louis Zoo’s recently completed Orthwein Animal Nutrition Center to study the effects of its structural health supplement, STEADFAST.
The partnership, in the form of a grant, will place a graduate student from the University of Missouri – Columbia with the Saint Louis Zoo for the next two years. The primary focus for this student will be to assess the effects of STEADFAST on enhancing joint health in wild equids, such as the Somali wild ass and Grevy’s zebra. “Since zoos are dedicated to providing a long, healthy life for each of its animal residents, we are excited about the potential of this product in helping to maintain a high quality of life for our zoo animals” explains Dr. Dierenfeld, Saint Louis Zoo, Nutrition Department.
“Horses, wild equids and canines share similar structural health” noted Jeremy Moore, Manager, Marketing, Novus Nutrition Brands. “We are excited to be one of the few companies partnering with zoos in animal nutrition research.”
The importance of animal nutrition and its affects on treating and/or preventing health issues is a new undertaking in zoos. The Saint Louis Zoo is fortunate to be one of a few that staffs an animal nutritionist. With the completion of its new state-of-the-art Orthwein Animal Nutrition Center, and the help of those like Arenus who are inspired by the field of animal nutrition research, Dr. Dierenfeld is leading the Saint Louis Zoo to the forefront in the field.
“A significant factor that sets Arenus apart from other supplement manufacturers is our philosophy of validating the efficacy of our products through relevant research,” said Moore. “Dr. Dierenfeld and the Saint Louis Zoo are globally recognized as leaders in animal health and nutrition and we look forward to working with them on this and future projects.”
Zoo President & CEO Dr. Jeffrey Bonner explains, “This partnership is a great example of how a strategic partnership can work between a company and a community organization like the Saint Louis Zoo to further both the company’s and organization’s missions.”
The Saint Louis Zoo is widely recognized for its innovative approaches to animal management, wildlife conservation, research and education. The Saint Louis Zoo has been named America’s #1 Zoo by Zagat Survey and Parenting Magazine.
